Beacon technology falls into the larger bucket of location-based technology. The first beacons to hit the scene were iBeacons and used only by Apple in their stores to personalize the customer experience within the Apple Store mobile app. In the fall of 2013, Apple began allowing 3rd party developers to integrate beacons into their apps and ever since the world has been abuzz with beacons.
